According to The Stein Line, the Lakers have expressed interest in signing veteran wing Matisse Thybulle while sign-and-trade negotiations with the Golden State Warriors for Kuminga remain far apart. The reported interest suggests Los Angeles is evaluating alternative ways to strengthen its roster ahead of training camp.
Thybulle, a two-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection, would immediately bolster the Lakers’ perimeter defense. Widely regarded as one of the NBA’s premier wing defenders, the 6-foot-5 veteran has the ability to guard multiple positions, generate steals, and disrupt opposing offenses with his length and instincts.
While offense has never been his calling card, Thybulle has shown improvement as a three-point shooter over the past few seasons, making him a more dependable two-way contributor. His ability to defend at a high level without demanding the ball could make him a seamless fit alongside a star-heavy Lakers lineup.
Meanwhile, the Lakers’ interest in Kuminga appears to be losing momentum. The athletic forward has been one of the most discussed names of the offseason, but the gap between Los Angeles and Golden State in sign-and-trade negotiations reportedly remains significant. Rather than waiting indefinitely, the Lakers appear to be exploring other avenues to address their need for wing depth.
Although Thybulle doesn’t offer the offensive upside or long-term ceiling that Kuminga possesses, he would provide immediate defensive value and playoff experience—qualities that could prove invaluable for a team with championship aspirations.
